Soap box derby scheduled for Saturday
The past will join hands — or at least share the road — with the present Saturday when the Wichita Falls YMCA plays host to a traditional soap box derby exhibition on Ninth Street in downtown Wichita Falls.
“It’s a wonderful family event,” Brandon Brown, YMCA president, said. For some time, Brown has wanted to revive the soap box derby concept, which was once a fixture on the YMCA calendar starting in the 1940s.
The exhibition will serve as a symbolic “finish line” for the Y’s annual Partners With Youth campaign, dubbed “Racing for the Kids.”
Four-man teams will “compete” for top honors in the non-motorized car race that starts on the hilltop in front of the First Baptist Church and ends in front of the downtown YMCA. The event will be a preview of a public soap box derby to be held later in the year.
“We’re going to invite folks to participate in a soap box derby this summer and we hope the exhibition will get people excited about entering,” Brown said. “We also hope it will remind people of the important role the YMCA plays in our community in providing programs for kids and a welcoming environment for families.”
The Wichita Falls YMCA Soap Box Derby is co-sponsored by All-American Car Wash and Block Division Inc. It will begin at 11:30 a.m. Saturday on Ninth Street. The public is invited and admission is free.
